SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan.— The 2017 wheat harvest in Reno County is past the halfway mark.
Darren Busick of the Reno County Extension Service says the harvest is about 60 percent completed and, if all goes well, should be finished by the middle of next week.
Busick says the numbers have been pretty good in the area with average yields running about 55-65 bushels per acre. Some fields have come in as high as 80-100 bushels per acre. The test weights have been positive as well, running 60-65 pounds per bushel.
The high yields are pushing protein levels down, which is normal in high-yield fields, according to Busick.
On-again-off-again chances of rain in the forecast for the next seven to 10 days could slow cutting down in central Kansas.
