After a series of recent school fund-raising events including one on Monday, April 29, students worked to collect new books to donate to the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center Children’s Unit.
Bryan Cunningham, Principal at STEM Magnet School at Allen, said that while the idea behind the fund raising events was for the school to collect 5% of each sale made at Wendy’s during the event, they saw an opportunity to pass along the benefits to other community organizations at the same time.
Principal Cunningham and 5 students made a visit to the children’s unit on Wednesday, May 8, to personally deliver the books that they collected. “The students were able to see the project come full-circle when we visited the hospital, because they were able to see where and how the books would be used,” said Cunningham.
Approximately 140 books were collected for the children at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. When a family arrives at the children’s unit, staff frequently offer books to the children to help make their stay a little more comforting. When it is time for the children to go home, they get to take their book home with them.
