Reno County authorities say they have recovered the body of a man who was reported missing after he went canoeing at Cheney Lake. According to the Reno County Sheriffs Department 31-year-old Sheldon Martin of Hutchinson went out in his canoe at Cheney and never returned.
Family members began searching for Martin around 5pm and alerted authorities when they found his truck on the lake west side around 10 pm. The KHP, Department of Wildlife and Parks and Sheriffs Officers joined in the search through out the night. Martin’s boat was found around 2am on the lakes north shore near the Mayfield and Pretty Prairie Road area. Martin was found a short distance away around 4am.
Martin was wearing his life jacket when he was found. Family member told authorities that Martin had little experience with the canoe. Its not known if Martin drowned, had some type of accident or died of hypothermia. An autopsy will be performed. Authorities do not suspect foul play.
