Suspect In District Attorney Attack Facing Attempted Murder Charge

A 27-year-old man alleged to have attacked Reno County District Attorney Keith Schroeder after a judge upheld his life sentence in a child sex case will face serious charges for that incident.

Courthouse sources tell us that Michael Sherman has been charged by the Attorney General’s Office with attempted first degree murder or in the alternative, aggravated battery. We have also confirmed that a warrant has been issued for his arrest in the case, but so far has not been served.

Sherman is alleged to have attacked Schroeder after Retired Judge William “Buck” Lyle upheld his sentence. Sherman is alleged to have jumped on Schroeder who was sitting at the prosecution table a few feet away. A Jail Officer, Lance Francis then jumped on both and put Sherman into a choke hold. Schroeder received a minor cut to his right forehead.

Sherman was earlier convicted of aggravated criminal sodomy of his own infant child back in August of 2012. He admitted that he was alone with the child and was watching pornography on his cell phone, then sodomized the child. He reportedly visited two porn websites using a smart phone.

He was in court back in July to appeal the Jessica’s Law portion of his sentencing when the attack on Schroeder occurred.

Once the warrant is served, he will be brought back to Hutchinson at some point to face the additional charges.

A call into the Attorney General’s office over the charges was not returned.
