The Kansas State Fair is also known for education. Thousands of kids descend on the fairgrounds for the state’s largest classroom. Over 5,500 Kansas students are expected to participate in this year’s educational field trip. It started Monday and the program supplies teachers with all of the materials they need for a successful field trip to the Fair.
Kansas spellers gathered at the fair to compete. This is the tenth year for the Kansas State Fair Spelling Bee. The written exam portion of the contest was held Monday in the Encampment building with the finalists advancing to the oral competition.
It brought over 87 spellers to the fairgrounds.
(3rd – 5th grade) 25 competed in the written test, 13 children advanced to the final oral spelling competition.
1st place winner, Hannah Nelson – Challenger Intermediate School, of Wichita.
2nd place winner, Priscilla Harder – Walton Rural Life Center School, of Walton.
(6th – 8th grade) 62 competed in the written test, 27 children advanced to the final oral spelling competition.
1st place winner, Aryan Verma – Lakewood Middle School, of Overland Park.
2nd place winner, Ashton Brunk – Inman Middle School, of Windom.
The prizes included a plaque and 75-dollars to the first place champion spellers, and a plaque and 50-dollars to second place contestants.
