HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The trial for one of two cases against a 34-year-old man arrested in two domestic incidents has been pushed back after a request from the defense.
Charles Mendenhall III faces trial for the two cases, one occurred on Dec. 24, 2015, and the other on Jan. 10, 2016.
He’s charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, criminal discharge of a firearm, criminal threat and two counts of aggravated endangerment of a child in the Christmas Eve incident. In the case from Jan. 10, he’s charged with aggravated battery, aggravated burglary, interference with law enforcement, violation of a protection from abuse order, criminal restraint and battery of Hutchinson Police Officer Josh Long.
There may be some defense motions coming before trial with the first case scheduled to go before a jury next week and the second case the following week. But, Judge Trish Rose granted the continuance in the first case and may do the same in the second when she hears arguments on that issue next Friday, that according to Senior Assistant District Attorney Steve Maxwell.
Judge Rose told us that she hadn’t yet scheduled a new date for the first case, but will do so in the very near future, possibly at next week’s hearing.
