HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Just before 7 p.m. Friday evening, Hutchinson fire units responded to 17th and Willison Road for a grass fire. When they arrived, they found a fast moving fire in heavy vegetation. Initial units were able to hold the fire at 17th without allowing it to jump the road, once following units arrived the fire was contained in 30 minutes with units on scene for several hours overhauling hot spots. The fire burnt an estimated 40 acres.
No injuries were reported and the cause of fire occurring near the roadway most likely a carelessly discarded cigarette.
Hutchinson Fire responded 14 units; mutual aid was requested from Buhler Fire with 4 units. District #3 and Burrton fire also responded for mutual aid with several units; however the fire was contained prior to jumping the road and they were released without being utilized.
