HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hundreds of career and technical education (CTE) students from high schools and colleges across the state will be descending upon Hutchinson next week to showcase their skills. The future workforce of Kansas will be on display at the SkillsUSA Kansas championship competitions to be held in Hutchinson, Kan., on April 18-20.
Hutchinson Community College, in conjunction with the Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy, the Kansas State Fairgrounds, the Atrium Hotel and the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce, is hosting a number of contests in which students demonstrate their skills in career areas including manufacturing, transportation, construction, hospitality and human services.
“Hutchinson Community College is excited to have the opportunity to help exhibit the talents of these students,” Janet Hamilton, HutchCC Department 2 Co-chair, said. “Not only is it an opportunity for these students to demonstrate their skills, but for the community and, specifically, the college, to showcase the outstanding facilities and faculty at Hutchinson Community College.”
During the competition, students will work against the clock and each other, proving their expertise in occupations such as mechatronics, architectural and technical drafting, precision machining, automotive service, collision repair, masonry, cabinet making, first aid/CPR, medical math and terminology, and in welding. All contests are run with the help of industry experts, trade associations and labor organizations, and test competencies are set by professional industry standards.
The winners will go on to compete in the national SkillsUSA Championships this June in Louisville, Ky.
