HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The 59-year-old man arrested over the weekend after he allegedly fatally stabbed his wife’s pit bull is expected to make a first appearance in court Friday.
John Oathout was arrested around 11:30 p.m. Saturday on suspicion of animal cruelty and disorderly conduct. Police Lt. Marty Robertson says that Oathout was trying to sleep and the dog was continually barking causing him and his wife to argue. He then put the dog outside, but it still continued to bark and as the couple argued over it. He allegedly told his wife that if the dog didn’t stop, he would kill it.
Robertson told Hutchpost that the wife heard a loud yelp from the dog and ran outside to find her husband with a bloody knife. According to Robertson, he then told his wife, “it’s your fault.”
She took the dog to a veterinarian, but the dog didn’t make it.
Oathoust was able to post bond and because he bonded out over the weekend, he’ll make an initial court appearance on Friday.
