McPHERSON, Kan. — McPherson Police are noting on social media that they have taken several reports from citizens claiming to be a McPherson Police officer and telling residents that they have overdue court fees and if the don’t pay them, they will go to jail.
They say the person calling sounds authentic and provides citizens with case numbers, judge’s names, attorney’s names, and charges.
They say they have received so many calls on this already, they want to get the basic information out to the community. They say that is not how the court system works.
They say this is a scam called the “green dot scam.” According to officials with Verizon, the phone is registered to a “Government Agency” and the people making the calls have technology that allows the number to appear as a local number.
If you get one of these phone calls, you are not required to report it to the police department. If you fall victim to this and financial information or money exchanges hands, they will have an officer make a report.
Again, it is a scam. If you have questions on any fees you may owe, contact the courthouse of the county you live in to check for any problems, including possible warrants.
