HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Sports Arena Building Committee got a taste of what the artwork will look like for the renovation project during their meeting on Tuesday.
The artwork for the arena will be done by world renowned public artist Koryn Rolsted of Seattle Wa., who has done a number of similar projects all over the United States. The artwork will be a combination of hanging and mosaic art work throughout the lobby area, using local work and recycled materials. If you remember, the City Council passed an ordinance requiring all city building projects to carry one percent of the project costs over for public art.
The Committee voted 4-2 to send the proposal to the City Council for their consideration. While both dissenting votes expressed the need for the art there was discussion that other proposals were not viewed by the full committee, and that it would be hard to make a decision on just one proposal. The proposal given to the building committee was approved by a combination of art and building committee members who went over the three final proposals from more than 180 applications during a meeting held late last week.
The city’s Public Art Committee says they will be happy to address any questions the public may have on the artwork and will continue to work with Rolsted on the final project.
