HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Local Fire crews responded to the 700 block of East 4th for a structure fire. When they arrived, they found smoke coming from one of the basement apartments. The occupant of the apartment on fire was outside, in need of medical care. Reno County EMS transported the occupant in serious condition to the hospital.
The fire was controlled in 20 minutes with units on scene for two hours. Preliminary damage is estimated at $50,000. Significant fire damage was sustained to the apartment.
The cause of the fire appears to be careless smoking. The apartment was occupied by one adult.
Red Cross was called to assist six other individuals from other apartments.
