HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 40-year-old Nickerson man arrested last week after allegedly taking a woman’s vehicle without permission was back in court Tuesday morning for the formal reading of charges.
Ricky Smith Jr. has been formally charged with possession of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, criminal deprivation of property and no driver’s license.
A Hutchinson woman told police on Dec. 7 that Smith took her Ford Focus from her residence without permission. Police were able to locate the vehicle with Smith driving. He told officers he thought he had permission. During this arrest for taking the vehicle, he allegedly was in possession of the meth and drug paraphernalia. He also told officers that his driver’s license was suspended.
Smith is already facing trial on charges of robbery and felony flee and elude for a case from May 6 of this year.
Smith allegedly forcibly removed a local woman from her vehicle, then took off. That led to law enforcement looking for the vehicle. He was eventually spotted in South Hutchinson. Smith is alleged to have led law enforcement on a high-speed chase into the county, where he was eventually captured.
His bond remains at $6,050 and his case will move to a waiver-status docket.
