HUTCHINSON, Kan. – A 28-year-old man who held Hutchinson Police at bay early yesterday morning and is accused of stabbing a Hutchinson woman was before a judge where he was read the formal charges.
Toby Hippen is now formally charged with attempted first-degree murder, or in the alternative, aggravated battery and aggravated burglary.
Hippen allegedly forced entry into the residence of 26-year-old Megan Drach at a home at 1301 E 25th. He then allegedly stabbed her repeatedly and then fled the scene. She was transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center then transferred to a Wichita-area hospital in serious, but stable condition.
He was later found at a home where he held police at bay, closing down a portion of west 5th street. He eventually surrendered without incident.
In court, after being read the charges, he told Magistrate Judge Cheryl Allen, kind of under his breath “you guys made a bunch of stuff up.” Later after she set a next court appearance of Jan. 13, he stated, “great, I look forward to it.”
You may recall Hippen who was convicted for causing severe injuries to a 2-year-old child and was granted two years community corrections for two counts of aggravated battery, and one count of aggravated endangerment of a child.
Police in that case had been dispatched to 910 E. Sherman back on July 18, 2011, on the report of a medical condition where a child had been badly injured. The child was first taken to the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, and later transported to Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita.
He was discharged from corrections in April of last year.
His bond in this latest case remains at $515,000.
