HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Mayor Jade Piros de Carvalho is inviting all area 7th graders to join the League of Kansas Municipalities essay contest, “If I were mayor,” to describe what they would do as mayor to make their city the best place in which to live.
Promoting good city government and civic engagement is important to the League, and this essay contest provides students the opportunity to reflect on the role of key elected officials in their own city. Six geographic regional winners around the state will be selected. Winners will receive a $125 cash prize and plaque. One overall winner will also be selected to represent the entire state and will receive a $250 cash prize and plaque. The winners, along with their teachers, will be recognized at a special ceremony in Topeka on Jan. 27, 2016.
The contest is open to all Kansas students enrolled in the 7th grade during the 2015-2016 school year. Each essay must include the following: student’s name, teacher’s name, home address, school name, home phone number, school address and school phone number. Essays may not exceed 250 words and must fit on one page. Essays must address the subject and begin with, “If I were mayor.” Only one essay may be submitted per student. Essays will be judged based on the following: creativity, clarity, sincerity of thought, understanding of city services and proper use of grammar.
