HUTCHINSON, Kan. – A local man made a first appearance Thursday on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, criminal damage and interference with law enforcement.
Curtis Garcia was before Magistrate Judge Cheryl Allen where he was told of those potential charges.
The case started early Wednesday morning when police were called for a possible armed subject, this in the 1900 block of North Walnut. Allegedly, Garcia was intoxicated and was angry, waving a pistol around while a female and at least one child were in the home. He then reportedly broke the gun at some point and then grabbed a knife. He’s also alleged to have damaged property within the home during this altercation.
When police arrived, they saw him get into a truck. They yelled “police” and told him to get out of the vehicle. At some point, he jumped out and ran from the officers but was quickly captured.
In court, he told the judge that gun wasn’t loaded and that it’s not like him to do this sort of thing.
Judge Allen set bond at $5,000 and the case will now be scheduled for a status hearing next week to give the state time to file formal charges.
