HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The committee that will recommend changes to the elementary school boundaries for Hutchinson USD 308 got a first look at two different proposals on Tuesday night.
The committee went over the proposed changes that are part of a plan by the district to eliminate one block of classes from one of the elementary schools in order to save money. Considerations to the two proposals include the number of students affected, how many classes would exceed capacity and the longevity of the changes.
The major differences in the two proposals is the direction the boundaries run The number of student affected is similar but it does make major changes to several schools especially McCandless which is loosing the block of classes. The school would lose 151 students under one proposal and 147 under the other. Loses among the other elementary schools numbers in the 20’s at Ferris to numbers in the 80’s for both Graber and Wiley. It needs to be noted that some of those students will be replaced by others from the other elementary schools. The largest increase would come at Lincoln where attendance would increase by 123 students under one proposal and 119 under the other. The district plans to put the changes in place by the 2016-17 school year.
The committee will meet one more time before the public forum which is set for October 13th.
