HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 56-year-old man who entered a plea to two counts of aggravated battery with DUI added to the mix, failing to stop at an accident and felony flee and elude was sentenced Friday morning by Judge Trish Rose.
She sentenced Curtis Cleveland to a total of 22 months in prison, granted 18 months community corrections, but sanctioned him 30 days in jail as a part of the corrections. The jail time was requested by the state. That will start Monday morning.
Cleveland was found guilty of fleeing from a sheriff’s deputy back on June 24, 2014, when he hit a small pickup driven by 26-year-old John Trussell of Hutchinson at the intersection of G and Plum. Cleveland’s vehicle continued to Campbell Street before coming to rest in the yard of a residence there. He then allegedly tried to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended.
Trussell and his passenger, a 10-year-old boy, were both taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment. A passenger in Cleveland’s vehicle, 37-year-old Nichole Hansen of Wichita, was treated at the scene and released. The state had charged Cleveland over her injuries, however, she failed to show up at the preliminary hearing, so the state dropped that charge.
