HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It’s no surprise that the preliminary hearing for Brennan Trass, who’s charged with first-degree murder, was continued Thursday at the request of the defense, considering that the shooting he’s accused of committing occurred just 10 days ago.
In court, he told Judge Trish Rose that he was a little upset that one of the attorneys for the Regional Public Defenders Office filed the motion for the continuance before they even met with him in the Reno County Correctional Facility. But, considering they probably don’t have all the discovery from the state needed to plan a defense, it’s not unusual for them to request more time.
The state had no objection to the continuance and Judge Trish Rose granted the defense request for the delay. The new preliminary hearing date is now set for Sept. 17, however, both sides can request a second continuance at any time.
Trass is accused in the shooting death of 24-year-old Jose Morales, who was found on the floor of the residence back on Aug. 17, with multiple gunshot wounds. He died about 90 minutes later at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.
He remains jailed on a $250,000 bond.
