HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Chess enthusiasts, or those wanting to give the game a try, will have two unique opportunities to play chess at the 2015 Kansas State Fair.
Both events will take place on Thursday, Sept. 17. At 11:00 a.m. at the House of Capper, renowned chess expert Gabriel Purdy, one of the highest ranked chess players in the state of Kansas and five-time state champion, will play simultaneous games against fifty competitors in a “50 vs. 1” competition. All skill levels are welcome, but play is limited to the first fifty registrants.
From 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Encampment Building, join in a 3-round Blitz Tournament & Giant Chess Set. In Blitz Chess, each side has a total of 5 minutes for all their moves of the game – so every game will finish in a maximum of 10 minutes. The Hutch CC Chess Club will provide official clocks to time the games. This fast-paced event will feature prizes for the top eight scores. Like the “50 vs. 1” competition, the Blitz Tournament is open to all skill levels and registration is recommended.
To register or for more information, contact Kay Shive at shivek@hutchcc.edu or by phone at 620-665-3559.
The Hutchinson Community College Chess Club meets during the semesters on Mondays from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Walnut Room of the Parker Student Union. You do not have to be a Hutch CC student to play; all skill levels and members of the public are welcome to attend and participate.
