HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Hutchinson Fire crews responded Monday to a home at 126 West 12th for a structure fire. When they arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the attic of the structure.
Fire units made entry into the two-and-a-half story structure to gain access to the fire area. Making entry into the attic was hampered by the internal layout of the building. This large home had been converted into apartments. The void spaces created by the remodeling hampered firefighter efforts to find the seat of the fire.
The fire was controlled in approximately one hour. Units were on scene for approximately three hours doing salvage and overhaul. Damage estimates are at $100,000 with a total loss to the structure.
The cause of the fire appears to be electrical in nature.
One firefighter was sent to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for observation.
Hutchinson Fire responded 14 units due to the difficulty of fighting the fire and for manpower because of the extreme temperatures.
