The recent rains and standing water is certainly a breeding time for mosquitoes in the area.

The Reno County Health Department has these recommendations for protection against mosquitoes.

Use effective repellants for keeping the bugs away from you. Also, avoid being outside at dawn and dusk, and make sure to repair any damaged window screens.

They suggest eliminating standing water from flowerpots, buckets and barrels. Change water in you pets dishes and replace the water in birdbaths weekly.

Drill holes in tire swings so water drains out. Clean rain gutters and make sure they are draining properly. Pick up trash and debris. Mosquitoes can breed in a very small amount of water.

Keep children’s wading pools empty and on their sides when not being used and put products such as Larvacide Briquets in standing water.
