Man bound over for trial in one case ordered to prison in two others

Sims

Sims

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 32-year-old man who was recently bound over for trial on a charge of aggravated battery for allegedly stabbing a 30-year-old man was sent to prison Friday morning by District Judge Joe McCarville.

The state argued that Drew Sims had violated his community corrections, saying the judge had earlier found probable cause to send the stabbing case to trial. That would indicate a violation of his corrections.

Defense Attorney Steve Osburn asked that the disposition in the two cases for theft and forgery be put off until the outcome of the trial in the new case. That was rejected by Judge McCarville, who ordered the over four years in prison be served. Those cases go back to the summer of last year.

Sims allegedly stabbed Brandon Zeh on Feb. 23. At that time, Sims admitted to Zeh that he damaged his door when he had been to his residence earlier. He, along with his fiancee, left, but when they came back, Zeh testified at the preliminary hearing that he ran downstairs and opened the door. That’s when the stabbing occurred.

He’s scheduled to be arraigned in that case on Monday.

Suspect in drug cases turns down state’s plea offer

Jeremy-Jiles-150x150

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 26-year-old man arrested for the sale of drugs and charged with racketeering was scheduled to be in front of Judge Tim Chambers Friday for a possible plea.

Jeremy Jiles had earlier waived his preliminary hearing in one case against him from 2013, while three other cases against him from last year were combined into one complaint and includes the charge of racketeering.

Deputy District Attorney Tom Stanton says that Jiles has turned down the plea offer and his attorney Charlie O’Hara hasn’t made any counter offer. O’Hara again asked and was granted a continuance by District Judge Tim Chambers.

The latest arrest came in June of last year where he’s charged with being in possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to package drugs, possession of personal use drug paraphernalia, criminal possession of a weapon and possession of marijuana.

The Reno County Drug Unit served a search warrant on his home in the 100 block of George. They allegedly found two vacuum sealed bags with marijuana. They also claim to have found a digital scale with marijuana residue on it, two gallon size zip-close bags with green vegetation, as well as additional new bags. Officers say they also found a pair of brass knuckles in a dresser drawer.

Jiles was arrested on Sept. 20, 2013, and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell, possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to package, personal use drug paraphernalia and no tax stamp. He’s accused of having more than 450 grams of marijuana, as well as packaging materials. That case is awaiting trial. Judge Chambers has set a trial date in that case on March 17.

No new date for a hearing on this matter has been announced.
