HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The two teens arrested in the 8th & Plum area early Wednesday morning appeared via video from the Reno County Jail.
18-year-old Jacob Rodriquez (top Left) faces possible charges which includes six counts of auto burglary, possession of marijuana, two misdemeanor counts of theft and four counts of attempted misdemeanor theft. In court, he claimed he was asleep the whole time and had nothing to do with any of the burglaries. He asked for a bond reduction. The state disagreed with statements that he wasn’t involved and asked that the bond stay the same. Magistrate Judge Randy McEwen agreed to lower his bond from $39,500 to $15,000.
It was a different story with the co-defendant 19-year-old Julio Cantu IV (top right). He also asked for a bond reduction saying he trying to get his life together, but Assistant District Attorney Andrew Davidson argued against it noting at age nineteen, he has an extensive criminal history including such crimes as burglary, criminal damage, aggravated battery and aggravated indecent liberties. Davidson called him the worst kind of criminal. He says, ‘he hurts people and steals from them.” Judge McEwen after hearing details of his criminal history denied the reduction in bond leaving it at $42,000. Potential charges include six counts of auto burglary, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and six counts of misdemeanor theft
Both will be back in court next Wednesday or whenever the state files formal charges.
