Many gathered for the ceremonious groundbreaking for Phase 1 of the Memorial.

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Local heroes gathered in South Hutchinson Thursday night to break ground for the new Reno County Veterans’ Memorial.

Survivors of Pearl Harbor, Vietnam, the Korean War and Operation Desert Storm were all on hand for the groundbreaking of Phase 1 for the new monument. Some of these real-life heroes were actually held captive as prisoners of war.

Members of the public also gathered as the American Legion Riders filed in for the opening ceremony. Matt Stiles, South Hutchinson City Administrator, gave opening remarks and introduced the many veterans on hand.

The Reno County Veterans’ Memorial will feature the names of local heroes who have protected our freedoms since the Civil War. To submit a name, go to RenoCountyVeterans.com.
