HUTCHINSON, Kan. – After a lengthy presentation and discussion, the Hutchinson City Council approved an ordinance that would set aside one percent of the cost of major construction projects to public art.
The City was approached several months ago about establishing a fund to where a certain percentage of certain city construction projects be set aside for ascetic design. The ordinance calls for the establishment of a Public Art Trust Fund that will be used to create and guide the development of public art involving city buildings, street scape and parks, and provide funding for their long term maintenance and conservation. The fund would not include such things as infrastructure work such as sewer and water line work, streets and certain buildings that are for storage or simple use.
The ordinance will also establish a Public Art design Council to be appointed by the Mayor and Governing Body. The Design Council would provide oversight of the public art trust fund and administer the program.
