HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The trial for a 33-year-old man accused of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of violation of a protection from abuse order and misdemeanor battery got underway Tuesday afternoon.

Raymon Hunter is accused of threatening Anthony Smith with a knife back on March 14, 2014 during an altercation where he is also alleged to have made physical contact with Smith.

Hunter came to his ex-girlfriends home with a dog even though she had filed a protection from abuse order against him. He was in the back yard and her new boyfriend, Anthony Smith was also there. Hunter apparently started to leave out a back gate, but Smith jumped off the back porch and started to shut the gate. Hunter is then alleged to have threatened him and the two got into a fight. During that time, Hunter is alleged to have pulled a knife and threatened him. Smith then allegedly grabbed a shovel and attempted to strike Hunter, but missed and ended up striking his girlfriend’s SUV. There is some question as to whether the knife was actually open when Hunter walked toward Smith, but according to the victim, he felt threatened during the altercation. The defense again brought that up during the trial when an investigative officer was on the stand.

Hunter is also accused in the case of violating the protection from abuse order on two occasions, one occurring on March 14, and the other on March 21, 2014.

Hunter is no stranger to law enforcement with previous convictions for possession of drugs, drug paraphernalia and driving while suspended. Those cases going back to 2004 and 2010.

The case is being heard in front of Judge Trish Rose and the trial continues Wednesday.
