Jury finds defendant “not guilty” in assault case

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The jury in the case against a 22-year-old Hutchinson man charged with aggravated assault found him “not guilty” of that charge, however they did find William Hickey “guilty” of a misdemeanor charge of criminal damage.

He was accused of pulling a knife on his father back on June 27, of last year. Hutchinson police were called to the scene on the report of a disturbance and took the report that Hickey had threatened his dad with a black pocket knife. The knife was found in the trunk of a car outside the home according to police testimony on Tuesday.

With the verdict on the felony charge, he will be sentenced next month on the misdemeanor.

Hickey has been on corrections for aggravated endangerment of a child in one case and attempted criminal threat in another which also involved his dad.

Multiple burglary trial continues in District Court

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The jury trial for a Missouri man accused of 19 local burglaries here in Hutchinson continues in District Court.

Joseph Paul Jones Jr. is accused of 45 counts involving the crimes which occurred back in the early morning hours of May 14, of last year. He’s accused of breaking into the local businesses by prying open doors or breaking the glass windows with a crow bar. Jones is also accused of cutting the telephone lines at several businesses before making entry.

The state was still presenting the jury with testimony of business owners who learned their property had been broken into and items taken including cash.

The defense is making note with each witness that police never took any finger prints at any of the businesses after the break-ins.

The trial is being held in front of Judge Trish Rose and is expected to continue on Thursday.

Great Bend man’s court appearance pushed back one day

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 38-year-old Great Bend man jailed last week here in Reno County for allegedly making a drug sale in Haven saw his court appearance Wednesday continued one day after the state announced they would be filing three cases against him.

Deputy District Attorney Tom Stanton says the three cases against Eduardo Nunez will include a charge of racketeering for the most recent case and another which goes back to early last year.

The latest involves him being caught with a red and white can and inside was a baggie with a crystal-like substance which tested positive for methamphetamine. It weighed about 31 grams. A large amount of cash was also found inside the console of the vehicle Nunez was driving.

It was about a month ago that he was arrested here in Reno County on drug charges and an outstanding warrant after a traffic stop.

In this latest case, he was arrested while at a Kwik Shop in Haven.
