Planning commission and BZA to discuss Mervis project

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – All of the behind the scenes work for the new Mervis rail car facility are moving along.

Several matters regarding the new company will be before various city entities Tuesday. Both the Hutchinson Planning commission and Board of Zoning Appeals will meet to take action on the Mervis project. It includes a request for a variance from zoning regulations regarding landscaping for the property, located in the Kansas Enterprise Industrial Park. The Planning CMervisommission will also take action on a conditional use permit for the project. Both meetings are set for Tuesday evening at 5 p.m. at the Hutchinson city offices on East B.

The Hutchinson City Council is also expected to take action on contract with the South Central Kansas Economic Development to act as the administrator for a Community Development Block Grant for $75,000 to help fund the project.

Mervis is building a major rail car repair facility just south of the Siemens plant. Mervis hopes to begin work at the site by next month.
