Braodacres fire

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Fire Units responded to the 7300 block of Backacres Road for a structure fire Thursday. When they arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from a detached shop with multiple exposures around.

The fire was controlled in 20 minutes with units were on scene for three and half hours, putting out hot spots as most of the roof had collapsed. Damage is estimated at $50,000 with heavy damage sustained to the shop and a pickup truck that was inside.

The occupant was working on the truck and was lowering the fuel tank when gas spilled, which eventually ignited from the wood stove being used for heat. The shop was occupied by two adults at the time, but no one was injured.

Hutchinson Fire responded six units with mutual aid requested from Buhler, Burrton, and Reno County District 9 in Haven since the area doesn’t have hydrants.

The Reno County Sheriff’s Office provided traffic control on Kent Road.

A second call about that same time was at 1208 Orchard. Crews arrived at the home for possible problems with a clothes dryer.
