Local sentenced to lesser charges in marijuana distribution case

marijuana_leaf

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 20-year-old man who entered a plea in a drug distribution case was granted 18-months community corrections on a nearly two year sentence.

Jacob Bugg was convicted of possession of marijuana with intent to sell, possession of drug paraphernalia to package drugs, personal use drug paraphernalia and possession of liquid codeine. However, as part of a plea agreement, he entered the plea to simple possession of marijuana and having no tax stamp. The two sides agreed on the recommended sentence.

The case started when Reno County Sheriff Deputy Jack Trussell initiated a traffic stop just after midnight back on May 30, in the 500 block of North Hendricks. The deputy says when he made contact with occupants of the vehicle and immediately smelled marijuana.

He did a search of the vehicle and found a prescription bottle which contained marijuana in the pocket of Bugg’s shorts. He was then placed him under arrest for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, that being the prescription bottle which is often used to store marijuana.

The deputy then conducted a search of the vehicle and allegedly found a glass mason jar that contained approximately 48.7 grams of marijuana, a digital scale and a box of zip-close baggies. Also in the backpack was a liquid prescription bottle that contained liquid codeine.

The driver of the vehicle, Brittany Blackburn, told the deputy that the backpack belonged to Bugg.

Sentencing was in front of Judge Tim Chambers.

Hutch man on corrections scheduled for trial next month in another

William-Hickey

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 22-year-old Hutchinson man on community corrections in one case will face trial in January in another.

William Hickey was in court Friday for a brief hearing over whether there would be any plea agreement in the case. His attorney informed the court that the state wouldn’t be extending any offer.

Hickey was bound over on a charge of aggravated assault after he pulled a knife on his father back in June. Hutchinson police were called to the scene on the report of a disturbance and discovered that Hickey had threatened his father with a black pocket knife.

He’s been on corrections for aggravated endangerment of a child in one case and attempted criminal threat in another.

It was back on June 13, 2013, when Hickey reportedly tortured or cruelly beat a 1-year-old child. The child sustained injuries to her face and also her bottom. In the other case he had been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for threatening his father with a knife. He was also charged with criminal threat for the same incident, which occurred May 17, 2012. He then entered a plea to the reduced charges and was granted corrections.

The trial in the latest case is now set to begin on January 20.
