HUTCHINSON, Kan. — On Wednesday, Fire Units responded to two structure fires.
The first incident was 11:43 a.m. in the 2100 block of East 43rd. When they arrived, they found a small shed in the rear of the property on fire. It turned out to be an animal shelter. The fire was quickly contained. There were seven piglets and their mother inside the structure. Five piglets were killed by the fire.
On-scene units were able to use an animal oxygen mask to revive one piglet that was later taken to the veterinarian by the homeowner.
The fire was controlled in five minutes with fire units on scene for 45 minutes. Damage was estimated at $500. The shelter was a total loss.
The fire was caused by a heat lamp. No other injuries were reported in the fire.
The second incident was at 11:24 p.m. at Elm Grove Estates at 2416 Brentwood. Units arrived on the scene to find the alarm panel activated. Staff had begun moving 20-25 residents due to a smell in the area.
The smell was discovered coming from the heat pump that had recently started running, blowing off dust. Units remained on the scene for 30 minutes.
No one was injured and all moved residents were allowed back to their rooms.
