GREAT BEND, Kan. — It has been over two months since a Reno County couple was killed in a motorcycle accident on West 10th Street in Great Bend. Now a Barton County Commissioner and the sister of one of the victims want to know why it has taken so long for the County Attorney’s Office to wrap up their investigation.
Barton County Attorney Doug Matthews was recently quoted saying his office is still investigating the accident.
That didn’t sit well with Barton County Commissioner Homer Kruckenberg. “I don’t want to fuss at the county attorney, but when he says there is no timetable to determine if charges will be filed, to me as a county commissioner, that’s embarrassing.”
Shawn Schellenger and his wife Danielle were killed in the Aug. 16th accident when a trailer being pulled by a pickup came loose and struck the motorcycle carrying the Schellenger’s. Danielle’s sister Nicole Haguewood, who lives in Cleveland, Ga., told Eagle Radio that the long wait for information has been frustrating.
“You talk to one person such as the chief of police and they tell you they’ve done everything on their part but when you talk to the district attorney, he says they are still missing information to make a final decision. It is frustrating and I’d hate for the information to just be sitting around on somebody’s desk,” she said.
59-year-old William Howard Baker of Great Bend drove the truck that was pulling the trailer. No charges have been filed in the case that was sent to the county attorney’s office over a month ago by the Great Bend Police Department to review and decide if the accident warrants criminal charges.
