Downtown Newton area now secure after bomb threat (UPDATE)

NEWTON, Kan. — Harvey County Community Corrections at 133 E. 6th St. received a bomb threat Monday morning about 8:15. A suspicious package was found outside in front of the building. Newton Police evacuated surrounding buildings as a precaution.

That included the Hutchinson Community College Newton Center, the Carriage Factory Gallery Park, Community Corrections and Newton City Hall.

ATF agents and the Wichita bomb squad were on scene. The bomb squad robot dismantled the package, which did contain a device. It included a bottle of fluid, a timer and electrical wires according to the Newton Police Department Facebook page. A bomb squad officer in protective gear went close to further investigate the contents. The device was dismantled with no detonation.

Residents were asked to avoid the area of 6th and Oak until police were able to give the all clear, but the area is now secure.

Police are still investigating the incident.

NEWTON, Kan. — The Newton Campus of Hutchinson Community College and other buildings in downtown Newton have been evacuated. Law enforcement authorities in Newton are on the scene of a reported explosive device. According to reports, a bomb threat was called in this morning and authorities found a suspicious package in a planter near the Community Corrections Office.

Buildings surrounding the County Community Corrections Center on East Sixth Street have been evacuated, including the HCC campus.

Agents with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are on the scene, and the Wichita Police Bomb Squad has also been called.
