HUTCHINSON, Kan. — We’ve been talking about the sales tax numbers for the month of August which reflect collections of sales tax in June.

What we didn’t mention was how much the county collected from sales tax dollars which is being used to pay for the building of the new county jail.

County Administrator Gary Meagher talked with commissioners about those numbers which show, for that tax, the collected $469,973 for the August number. Just like the regular sales tax numbers, that shows they collected less in August than in July, by a little over $27,000.

So far this year, the county has collected $3,752,672, which again goes toward paying off the cost of building the new jail. They only collected for one month last year and that was in December when they collected $473,376.

Some of the money collected will be used to move some county offices to what is currently the Reno County Jail Annex. Other plans for the money raised include adding a new entrance to the courthouse and doing some improvements to the Law Enforcement Center.

The money is being collected with a half cent sales tax approved by Reno County voters.
