HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With its future in doubt, the Export-Import Bank announced Monday that it is loaning Peruvian wind farms $65 million. The wind projects are using Siemens’ turbines assembled in Hutchinson.
The Tres Hermanas and Marcona wind projects total about 129 megawatts. Last year the bank agreed with $257 million in financing for projects that support renewable energy products, according to the Ex-Im statement. The Ex-Im bank has come under fire recently as congress considers whether to continue the export funding tool that has been in place since the 1930s.
Supporters of the Ex-Im bank say it helps create jobs, while opponents say the system is corrupt and places too much burden on tax payers with its projected $2 billion cost over the next 10 years.
