Local unemployment numbers show an increase last month

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The unemployment rate in Hutchinson and Reno County has gone up according to the latest numbers released by the Kansas Department of Labor.

According to those numbers, the rate in Hutchinson was 5.2% in July, a jump from 4.8% in June. But that number is still considerably lower then the 6.2% in July of last year. There were 1,105 residents without work last month according to the report.

Reno County saw its unemployment number in July rise to 4.9%, up from 4.2% in June. The number in July of last year was 5.7%. There were 1,649 residents without work in the county, but as always most of those live in the city of Hutchinson.

Surrounding counties also saw increase with the rate in Harvey County now at 5.3%, Kingman County at 3.8%, Pratt County at 3.7%, Rice County at 4%, Stafford County at 5.1% and Sedgwick County, the largest in the area was at 6.6%. McPherson County was the exception. Their rate stayed the same in July as it was in June at 3.9%.

Although not seasonally adjusted, the state unemployment rate was 5.4 percent, up from 5.1 percent in June and down from 6 percent last year, but the seasonably adjusted rate is at 4.9% statewide.
