HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 44-year-old man still serving time for crimes in Shawnee County and charged with aggravated escape from custody here in Reno County will face trial on October 28.

Mark Lucas faces the charge after he walked out an unlocked gate of the Hutchinson Correctional Facility’s minimum security unit in August of 2013. He eventually ended up in Topeka where he was captured by KDOC officials. Lucas had contacted them and other law enforcement to make arrangements to surrender.

He faces a potential sentence of just over 11 years in prison. That would run consecutive to the sentence he’s currently serving for numerous convictions for burglary and theft. There were a total of 19 charges that he entered into pleas in the Shawnee County case.

He still has eight and a half years in prison to serve on that case. Any sentence would run consecutive to that.
