HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A hearing is set for September 29th for a Hutchinson teen accused of killing his mother and sister by setting fire to the family home.
The hearing for 14-year-old Sam Vonachen will be held before Judge Patty Macke Dick at 8 a.m. in juvenile court. The date was set during a status conference July 22nd. Vonachen faces two counts of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and aggravated arson. The special setting will be held to determine if the teen will be tried in juvenile court or as an adult. Vonachen is accused of setting fire to the family home last fall by pouring gasoline throughout the house then lighting it. The blaze killed two family members while the suspect’s father was able to escape the blaze.
While most of the proceedings in the case have been closed off to the public it appears, at least for now, that the hearing will be in open court.
