HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Property taxes are probably the most hated of all taxes paid out by the public.
As the fiscal year comes to an end, a list of the top property tax payers and valuations was made available to Eagle Media by the County Clerk’s Office. Not much has changed from last year as to the order of top tax paying entities and, as usual, utilities lead the way. Westar Energy led the way as the top property tax payer in the county at more than $5.7 million on total valuation of $37.5 million. Kansas Gas Service was next at $1.026 million, and BNSF Railway was third at just over $990,000.
The rest of the top ten includes:
Panhandle Eastern Main Line and Mid American Pipeline (all utilities) at 4th, 5th and 6th.
Union Pacific was 7th , followed by utility companies Excalibur Production, Magellan Pipeline and Southwestern Bell to round out the top ten.
Some other notables on the list:
Rubloff Properties, which lost the Hutchinson mall to receivership, was 12th on the list. Milling company Archer Daniels Midland was 20th and developer Jim Strawn was 28th.
The top ten companies paid out more than $12.8 million of property taxes on total valuation of more than $85 million.
