HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Administration and Auditors are confident there is no wrongdoing within the County Treasurer’s Office, but the mounting bookkeeping problems are certainly becoming a major headache.
The department is still plagued with problems in doing most of the normal daily tasks it’s required to do. A report to the commission Tuesday confirmed that the tax payouts and disbursements are off again by more than $2 million. The problem is so bad that the county is hiring a private auditor to keep the books in line. The County Commission also expressed its lack of confidence in Jan Hull, especially after she refused to attend yesterday’s meeting to discuss the matter.
While Hull cannot be removed from office by the County Commission, the public can still ask for a recall. Even if no legal wrongdoing exists, Hull could still be recalled on the grounds that she is not able to do her job as prescribed by law. County Elections Clerk Jenna Fager tells hutchpost.com that a three-person committee can come together and ask for a petition for a recall. That committee must be made up of registered voters. The committee would then need to collect signatures from 40 percent of the registered voters who cast a ballot in the election Hull was voted into office. In this case, the last Presidential Election. If the committee collects those signatures, the petition would then move on to the Reno County District Attorney’s office where the DA would issue an opinion on whether the petition is sufficient, for any recall to proceed, that according to County Counselor Joe O’Sullivan.
The petition would need 9,986 signatures from registered voters in order for it to be valid.
