HUTCHINSON, Kan. — You would think that getting a group of people together to break a world record for the largest swim lesson would be easy.
Ted Nelson, Director for the Salt City Splash in Carey Park, who participated in the attempt to have the largest swim lesson ever, says it was much more than that. Nelson says 52 people showed up for the swim lesson Friday morning as part of the attempts to break last years record of 32,450 participants.
Nelson says there was much more to it than just showing up. Two witnesses had to be on hand to sign participants in a watch the entire process to that it could be submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records. Not only that the participants had to go through an actual swim lesson that taught water safety and the benefits of swim lessons. Not only that, but each participating swimming pool across the nation had to do the same portion of the lesson at the same time, meaning if the lesson called for treading water, that’s what each swimming pool did, simultaneously.
Nelson says it will be a little bit before they know if they broke the world record, but said it was a fun way to spend the morning.
