HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department is giving notice that mosquitoes will become quite a problem in the coming days. Rains, humidity and high temperatures are ideal for mosquitoes. The Health department says you can use the following measures to protect yourself:
• Use effective repellants with Deet (at least 23%)
• Avoid being out at dawn and dusk
• Repair window screens.
There are other things you can do around your yard to keep the population of mosquitoes down.
Eliminate standing water by:
◄ Empty standing water from flowerpots, buckets and barrels;
◄ Replace water in pet dishes and birdbaths weekly;
◄ Drill holes in tire swings so water drains out;
◄ Clean rain gutters for good drainage;
◄ Pick up trash and debris;
◄ Keep children’s wading pools empty when not being used;
◄ Apply larvacide briquets to standing water.
