Harvest off to a slow start

HUTCHINSON, Kan.— Harvest is under way in southern parts of the state, and that includes some parts of southern HarvestingReno County.

According to the Mid Kansas COOP, some cutting was done over the weekend before Sunday’s rain. And the numbers were about what was expected. Yields averaged between 18-40 bushels per acre with good test weights coming in at 56-60 pounds per bushel. Protein content is not bad either at better than 13.4. Many feel that the cool weather just before harvest will improve the quality of the wheat, there just won’t be much of it to cut due to the drought.

The COOP expects the harvest to kick in again in the next day or two once fields dry out.
