HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 40-year-old woman who claims she is homeless and living in her van was arrested over the weekend and could face some felony charges after she failed to cooperate with a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper.
Anita Landrum faces potential charges of felony flee and elude, interference with law enforcement possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while suspended, no insurance, and no up to date registration.
The case against Landrum started around 1:40 p.m., Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Blvd., and Wilson Road, when she was observed by the trooper for not wearing a seat belt.
The trooper made a traffic stop and then made contact with Landrum and she allegedly refused to show a driver’s license and proof of insurance, claiming he had no right to ask for that information and was violating her rights and the constitution. She then refused to exit the vehicle when asked and allegedly put the vehicle in drive, telling the trooper she was going to drive away. He told her if she did, she would be placed under arrest. But, she allegedly did anyway and wouldn’t stop even while the trooper followed her with his emergency lights on. They ended up at a home in the 900 block of Hayes where she still refused to exit the vehicle. Back up officers arrived and they ended up breaking the drivers side window and pulling her from the vehicle and she was then taken into custody. She then allegedly refused to give the trooper her name.
Law enforcement did an inventory of her vehicle and allegedly found a wooden dugout with marijuana, a white one hitter pipe, a glass marijuana pipe and a black canister with more marijuana. They also found documentation showing who she was.
In court Monday, she told Magistrate Judge Randy McEwen that she had been living in her van, however might find residency at the property on Hayes St.
The state indicated that she has an active warrant, this apparently with the city of Maize in Sedgwick County. She also failed to appear in a case in Douglas County according to the state, but she claim she doesn’t know anything about a case in Lawrence from 2010.
The judge agreed to make her bond a signature or O-R bond which is $4,450 dollars and set a status hearing in the Reno County case for June 10.
She’ll now have the face the warrant in Sedgwick County.
