Peace officers memorial service set for Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County law enforcement again honoring fallen members of law enforcement with its National-Police-Weekannual service on Friday at 11 am at the Law Enforcement Center..

Among those remembered Friday will be Reno County Undersheriff Edward Metz, who died in 1901 when he was pushed under a train; Deputy Thomas Simpson Fowler, who was shot and killed by a

burglary suspect in 1911; Officer Reason Sherman Monroe, who was fatally shot nine times while investigating a family disturbance in 1924; Police Lt. Shelby Comstock, who was shot and killed after stopping a vehicle in 1956; and Officer Kenneth M. Kennedy, who was shot by while investigating liquor crimes in 1972.

Sheriff Randy Henderson will begin with opening statements. Pastor Willard Stafford will give the invocation and Col. Ernest Garcia with the Kansas Highway Patrol will be the featured speaker. Sheriff’s Detective Chris Massingill will play taps. A cook out will follow for all law enforcement and employees.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be in the Veterans Room in the basement of the courthouse.
