What could only be described as a tongue lashing by County Commissioner Dan Deming to County Treasure Jan Hull occurred Tuesday morning during the County Commission meeting. The lashing was over the second half property tax notices that were sent in post card form.
Deming stated that he feels misled by Hull over the cards which he says didn’t have the information on them they were told would be on there. Apparently, it only stated that second half property taxes are due by May 12, but didn’t provide any additional information such as how much the property owners still owed. Hull explained that the couldn’t get it lined up properly to do that. She says she had talked with other counties that did the same thing of just putting the due date and that it worked for them okay. She says people just had to get used to it.
The other objection of Mr. Deming is the cost. He says they were told that it would save the county money, but now doesn’t appear to have any real savings at all, in fact could cost more.
Deming questioned Hull as to why she didn’t inform County Administrator Gary Meagher or the commission over the change? She claims there wasn’t time, but even Commission Chair James Schlickau told her that she should have informed someone such as Meagher.
Hull then left the commission chamber, so what if anything will be done in the future with notices is uncertain.
