One of two men charged with a burglary where a large stash of guns were taken was in court Thursday for a motion to have a competency evaluation. This comes at the request of Wichita Attorney Alice Osburn who represent 18-year-old Joshua Cellers.
Judge Joe McCarville agreed to have the evaluation done by Horizon’s Mental Health Center in Hutchinson, and if deemed incompetent, he could be sent to Larned State Mental Hospital for further evaluation.
Cellers along with 19-year-old Brandon Hudson are both charged with aggravated burglary, felony theft and criminal damage to property.
Judge McCarville had earlier denied a bond reduction for Cellers in part because of the stash of weapons taken, but also because of possible mental issues. He at that time suggested that Cellers could be a danger to the community because of threatening to shoot people. Standing at nearly 7-foot, Cellers would be a hard individual to stop. The Reno County Jail Log shows no bond listed, but he is in custody.
The two men allegedly used a credit card to pick a lock to an attached garage at a home on Cone St. They allegedly took as many as 5-rifles and 9-handguns. The burglary occurring while the occupant of the residence was home, back on February 26.
Cellers has two other cases pending, one where he’s charged with burglary of a dwelling and theft of a firearm in a case from January 31. This occurring at a home in the 600 block of Town & Country.
The third case includes charges of non-residential burglary, criminal damage to property and misdemeanor theft. In this case, he’s alleged to broken in to the Extreme Crossfire Paintball at 5 North Mohawk Road, and the stealing a golf cart. These crimes occurring back on January 19.
The case against Hudson is also still pending.
